It was very, very simple: the idea of catching something that would be good to expand on and roll with it.”\u003c\/em\u003e Repetition is the name of the game on \u003cem\u003eBaby Steps\u003c\/em\u003e, the astutely-titled EP that sees \u003cstrong\u003eTheo\u003c\/strong\u003e cautiously emerging from under the wing of \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Moodymann\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMoodymann\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e (who originally released “Lake Shore Drive” as the B-side to his \u003cem\u003eInspirations From A Small Black Church On The Eastside Of Detroit\u003c\/em\u003e EP in ’95) and establishing a sound that is wholly his own; an off-kilter strain of soulful house that could only have emanated from a born-and-bred Chicagoan settling down in the motor city. \u003cstrong\u003eTheo\u003c\/strong\u003e would offer a more distilled version of this sound on his \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?\u0026amp;q=theo%20First%20Floor\u0026amp;filter=Brand\/Manufacturer\/Artist_fq:%22Theo%20Parrish%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eFirst Floor\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e LP a couple years later, but \u003cem\u003eBaby Steps\u003c\/em\u003e offers a snapshot of one of Detroit’s most influential producers finding his footing. By now we all know “Lake Shore Drive,” \u003cstrong\u003eTheo\u003c\/strong\u003e’s love letter to Chicago, done Detroit-style. “Early Byrd” is a shuffling, side-long roller built on a loop of - yup, you guessed it - \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Donald+Byrd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eDonald Byrd\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e, and an earlier edit of “Walking Thru The Sky,” which was later included on \u003cem\u003eFirst Floor,\u003c\/em\u003e first appeared here. Still banging 20 years on; keep this in your bag, you’ll want to play all three tracks over the course of the night.
