There are grim moments and wrought metaphors, but they are often punctuated by moments of crystal clarity. “Hotel Bar” is alternate-picked guitar that approaches and retreats, delicate string flourishes and self-assuring lyrics. “The Running Styles Of New York” is an electric number, scowling guitars and slabs of piano. “My Dear” is vibrant fingerpicking over the softest kick drum I’ve ever heard, “I’m a Stranger Now” is a dramatic harmonica-led folk workout, the instrument gets a chance to stretch out on “Waiting For My Ghost”.
