Originally inserted into our consciousness via an excellent \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=chaz+bundick+mattson+2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003ecollab full-length\u003c\/a\u003e with \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=toro+y+moi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eChaz Bundick\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e last year, \u003cstrong\u003eJonathan Mattson\u003c\/strong\u003e (the drumming half of the identical twin brothers) explains: “The purpose of our reinterpretation of \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?\u0026amp;q=A%20Love%20Supreme\u0026amp;filter=Brand\/Manufacturer\/Artist_fq:%22John%20Coltrane%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eA Love Supreme\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e was to lean into the spirit of exploration and transformation that’s embodied in jazz. We don’t claim to be traditional jazz musicians, for us it’s about creatively adapting the art form, decontextualizing it, and exploring the genre in new ways.” While it doesn’t top the original - that’s certainly not their intent - this adventurous approach does justice to the creative fire that \u003cstrong\u003eTrane\u003c\/strong\u003e \u0026amp; co. brought into the studio when they recorded his magnum opus, and that’s what counts: “Jazz has been confined to such a narrow definition over the years and we want to make sure the genre continues to grow and evolve. It should be a living, breathing thing.” The two brothers used \u003cstrong\u003eColtrane\u003c\/strong\u003e’s notes, along with the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/products\/john-coltrane-a-love-supreme-the-complete-masters-vinyl-3lp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003ecomplete session outtakes\u003c\/a\u003e and previous tributes by other players to prepare for the recording, and Jonathan’s explosive drumming and Jared’s majestic gypsy guitar feels almost as urgent and transcendent as \u003cstrong\u003eColtrane\u003c\/strong\u003e’s original. There’s something about that gong that opens “Part 1: Acknowledgement,” followed by \u003cstrong\u003eJared Mattson\u003c\/strong\u003e running through \u003cstrong\u003eTrane\u003c\/strong\u003e’s opening sax lick that just gives me chills. Further proof (if you needed it) that \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=John+Coltrane\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eJohn Coltrane\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e wasn’t just a genius saxophonist but a brilliant composer, as his works retain their high potency regardless of who’s playing them.
