Like so many talented reedmen before him, Nozero received instruction from Detroit’s Teal School of Music, creating common ground with \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Yusef+Lateef\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003eYusef Lateef\u003c\/a\u003e, \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Joe+Henderson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003eJoe Henderson\u003c\/a\u003e and \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Benny+Maupin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003eBenny Maupin\u003c\/a\u003e. Although Nozero flirted with the Strata groundlings briefly in 1964 as a member of Charles Moore’s Detroit Contemporary 5, he was soon drafted into the military. A mixed blessing, Nozero took full advantage of the opportunities within the Army Band, which led to several high profile jobs upon his return to Detroit. Despite lengthy engagements with \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Henry+Mancini\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003eHenry Mancini\u003c\/a\u003e, \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Sergio+Mendes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003eSergio Mendes\u003c\/a\u003e, and studio work with everyone from Holland-Dozier-Holland to \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Berry+Gordy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003eBerry Gordy\u003c\/a\u003e, Nozero still relished musical freedom of expression, which made him right at home on the Strata roster.
