Early on, he drummed for \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=yeasayerhttps:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=yeasayer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eYeasayer\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e and \u003cstrong\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=of+montreal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003eOf Montreal\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e, and a bit later in the truly incredible live incarnation of the \u003cstrong\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/products\/caribou-vibration-ensemble-cve-live-2011-four-tet-james-holden-vinyl-lp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003eCaribou Vibration Ensemble\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e. Between these jaunts, he wrote, produced, and recorded two Sinkane records effectively on his own. \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=caribou\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eCaribou\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e’s \u003cstrong\u003eDan Snaith\u003c\/strong\u003e heard what he was working on for his third, and was blown away by the track “Runnin’”, which he bestowed with a \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=daphni\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eDaphni\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e remix on a super limited 12” in 2011. This tune signaled a shift in the sound of the project, moving away from indie rock crossover psychedelia to complex Afrobeat with a refreshing pop sheen. 2012’s \u003ci\u003eMars\u003c\/i\u003e (\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=dfa+records\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003eDFA\u003c\/a\u003e) saw Sinkane become a *band*, experience that would serve him well during his stint as bandleader for a touring revue of the music of Nigerian funk musician \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=william+onyeabor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWilliam Onyeabor\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e. Sinkane’s latest is \u003cem\u003eDépaysé\u003c\/em\u003e, a jubilant record of \u003cstrong\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?\u0026amp;q=sly%20stone\u0026amp;filter=Brand\/Manufacturer\/Artist_fq:%22Sly%20%26%20The%20Family%20Stone%22%20OR%20Brand\/Manufacturer\/Artist_fq:%22Sly%20Stone%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003eSly Stone\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e and \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=george+clinton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eGeorge Clinton\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e-esque Afro Rock. Gallab explains the title thusly - “Dépaysé is a French word that basically means “to be removed from one’s habitual surroundings.” By extension, it means to be disoriented, homeless. That's a feeling I relate to very much in these times — and I don’t think I’m the only one who feels this way. That word gave me clarity and made the journey inward that much more exciting.” But in covering Gallab’s experience as an immigrant, the mood is celebratory, not cynical. Opening “Everybody” begins with immediate call and response lyrics shouted by Gallab and backing vocalist\/keyboard player \u003cstrong\u003eElenna Canlas\u003c\/strong\u003e. “Stranger” is a neat reggae rumble with strong, straightforward vocals about faith-related struggles, “Ya Sudan” is an uplifting rocker with bright keyboards and a complex, chugging bassline. Title track “Dépaysé begins with an flanged-out guitar solo, with lyrics that shift between English and Arabic.
