I came to this album naively looking for a \u003cstrong\u003ePhotek\u003c\/strong\u003e sample and stuck around for the transcendental cosmic vibes, frolicking jazz-funk, stirring free jazz freakouts and thorny bass solo madness (\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Cecil+McBee\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eCecil McBee\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e’s “Love”). This was supposedly \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Lonnie+Liston+Smith\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eLonnie Liston Smith\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e’s first time touching an electric piano, and that sense of awestruck realization beams through in the sublime Rhodes playing on “Astral Traveling,” the album’s opening track (which \u003cstrong\u003eSmith\u003c\/strong\u003e also composed). \u003cem\u003eThembi\u003c\/em\u003e has been in serious need of a reissue for a while now (30 years since the last pressing), and this one was well worth the wait, with clean replica gatefold artwork and gorgeous sound. After having to endure \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/products\/sire-records-just-say-50-sire-records-50th-anniversary-vinyl-4lp-boxset-record-store-day\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"\u003epointless\u003c\/a\u003e, \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/products\/bee-gees-extended-vinyl-12-record-store-day\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"\u003eunwanted\u003c\/a\u003e catalog drudges from the major labels year after year (we’ve increasingly had to rely on labels like \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=superior+viaduct\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"\u003eSuperior Viaduct\u003c\/a\u003e, \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=be+with+records\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"\u003eBe With\u003c\/a\u003e, \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Light+In+The+Attic\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"\u003eLight In The Attic\u003c\/a\u003e et al for decent sounding reissues of no-brainer jazz essentials like this), it’s nice to see them come correct.
