After several CD-R \u0026amp; cassette releases on small east coast D.I.Y. labels, Lopatin caught the attention of \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=editions+mego\" target=\"_blank\"\u003eEditions Mego\u003c\/a\u003e, the highly respected Austrian experimental label run by \u003cstrong\u003ePeter Rehberg\u003c\/strong\u003e. \u003cem\u003eReturnal\u003c\/em\u003e opens with “Nil Admirari”, 5 minutes of harsh noise which Lopatin describes as “like in a film, where the first shot is exposition that gives you a sense of location, and then it goes into the character world”. The sequence that follows (“Describing Bodies” and “Stress Waves”) is pure \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=juno+60\" target=\"_blank\"\u003eJuno-60\u003c\/a\u003e ethereal bliss. “Preyouandi” is a preview of the frenetic sample collages Lopatin would explore on \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?\u0026amp;q=replica\u0026amp;filter=Brand\/Manufacturer\/Artist_fq:%22Oneohtrix%20Point%20Never%22\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eReplica\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e, his 2011 follow up to \u003cem\u003eReturnal\u003c\/em\u003e. But the album’s highlight is the title track: a krauty, vocoder-led piece which caught the attention of \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=anohni\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eANOHNI\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e, who later covered it (Lopatin returned the favor by co-producing \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=anohni\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eANOHNI\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e’s 2016 album\u003cem\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=anohni+hopelessness\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e Hopelessness\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e).
