But where the bulk of their excavations have traded in modest ambient, new age and electronic folk, the songs that make up \u003cem\u003eUneven Paths\u003c\/em\u003e have been executed with unabashed pop aspirations. Europe in the 1980s was swirling with the sounds of reggae, afrobeat, exotica and post-punk, as well as the latest mutations of jazz and R\u0026amp;B from the States. Some of these shades can be heard in the work of \u003cstrong\u003eI-Level\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=The+Police\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe Police\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e and \u003cstrong\u003ePrefab Sprout\u003c\/strong\u003e, but the artists documented on \u003cem\u003eUneven Paths\u003c\/em\u003e were operating on the fringes of the jazz and experimental scenes, longing for even a fraction of the chart success enjoyed by the aforementioned bands. Most were plagued by a certain degree of lo-fi kitsch that prevented them from crossing over when they really should have (\u003cstrong\u003eNonobstant\u003c\/strong\u003e’s “Jessica” for example is so catchy, you’ll swear you’ve heard it before), making this comp somewhat of a kindred spirit to Chocolate Industries’ \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?\u0026amp;q=Personal%20Space\u0026amp;filter=Brand\/Manufacturer\/Artist_fq:%22Chocolate%20Industries%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cem\u003ePersonal Space\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e. Still, that doesn’t explain the undeserved obscurity of immaculately-produced tracks like \u003cstrong\u003eXavier Jouvelet\u003c\/strong\u003e’s \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=George+Michael\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eGeorge Michael\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e-esque vocoder ballad “Oeuf En Clock” (the melancholy vibe is said to have been inspired by the news of \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Jaco+Pastorius\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eJaco Pastorius\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e' passing just the day before recording), or the spine-tingling noir-wave of \u003cstrong\u003eViolet Eves\u003c\/strong\u003e’ soaring “Listen Over The Ocean,” two of the comp’s best entries.
