While his releases have grown increasingly earnest over the years, culminating in 2017’s remarkably vulnerable \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?\u0026amp;q=This%20Old%20Dog\u0026amp;filter=Brand\/Manufacturer\/Artist_fq:%22Mac%20Demarco%22\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eThis Old Dog\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e, \u003cem\u003eRock And Roll Night Club\u003c\/em\u003e sees Mac trying on an assortment of colorful wigs (and lipstick); playing like \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Bruce+Springsteen\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eBruce Springsteen\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e and \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Elvis+Presley\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eElvis Presley\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e trading bars high as hell in the studio with \u003cstrong\u003eR. Stevie Moore\u003c\/strong\u003e and \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?\u0026amp;q=DJ%20Screw\u0026amp;filter=Category_fq:%22Vinyl%20Records%20%2F%20Music%22\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eDJ Screw\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e. Mac sings in a husky, breathy voice over minimal 4-track arrangements that sound like they’ve been bounced to ferric cassette and left in the sun for a few days. The progenitors (and direct influences) of Mac’s sound are on full display here: “I’m A Man” sees Mac at his most \u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Ariel+Pink\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\" data-mce-href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Ariel+Pink\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eAriel Pink\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e. “She’s Really All I Need” is the closest you’ll get to hearing what we now know to be Mac’s *real* voice, albeit sung in the style of \u003cstrong\u003eAtlas Sound\u003c\/strong\u003e or \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Deerhunter\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eDeerhunter\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e circa 2009. But that’s not a bad thing. It’s cool to hear one of the most reliable songwriters of our time veering so far out. Discogs prices for this record have been rising as rapidly as dad hat sales in recent years, and \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Captured+Tracks\" target=\"_blank\"\u003eCaptured Tracks\u003c\/a\u003e come through to save the day with the sweet repress action. This 2018 edition adds two tracks not found on the original pressing: “Me And Mine” and “Only You” (one of the sickest \u003cstrong\u003eMDM\u003c\/strong\u003e songs we’ve heard) with code for digital download.
