To be completely honest, I can take or leave the vocals, but I appreciate what they were trying to do here. Jazz in 1974 was all about finding new horizons, unchartered landscapes, unexplored galaxies etc.; so LLS \u0026amp; crew reject the purist mood that pervaded the 60s, in turn embracing the funk and soul sounds that were increasingly threatening to define their generation. Still, Lonnie does his thing to a pair of jazz standards: the melody for \u003ca rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=John+Coltrane\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eTrane\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e’s “\u003ca rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=John+Coltrane+Naima\" target=\"_blank\"\u003eNaima\u003c\/a\u003e” is reinterpreted with lyrics, and “Footprints” takes a spiritually-minded approach to \u003ca rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Wayne+Shorter\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWayne Shorter\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e’s original. The opening title track is funkier than anything on \u003cem\u003eAstral Traveling\u003c\/em\u003e, taking a cue from \u003ca rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Herbie+Hancock\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eHerbie\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e’s slick arp basslines on \u003ca rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Herbie+Hancock+Head+Hunters\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eHead Hunters\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e released the previous year. “Sais,” composed by a pre-\u003ca rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Juicy+Fruit+Mtume\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eJuicy Fruit\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e \u003ca rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Mtume\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eJames Mtume\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e, opens side B with some proper stretched-out afrofuturism before settling into gorgeous ballad “Peaceful Ones,” featuring some of Lonnie’s most divine Rhodes playing and a tender vocal from Donald.
