Cruise’s previous singing experience was strictly rooted in loud, theatrical, Broadway-style belting, but Lynch encouraged her to tap into her ‘soft, sad side’ for a song they were working on for the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?\u0026amp;q=blue%20velvet\u0026amp;filter=Brand\/Manufacturer\/Artist_fq:%22Angelo%20Badalamenti%22\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eBlue Velvet\u003c\/em\u003e soundtrack\u003c\/a\u003e because they couldn’t afford to license \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=This+Mortal+Coil\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThis Mortal Coil\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e’s “Song To The Siren.” Lynch and Badalamenti were so impressed with her ability to mirror the ethereal beauty of \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Liz+Fraser\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eLiz Fraser\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e on “Mysteries Of Love,” they decided to record a full album with her. The \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Twin+Peaks\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eTwin Peaks\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e \/ \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=article%2Cpage%2Cproduct\u0026amp;q=Blue%20Velvet\u0026amp;_=pf\u0026amp;pf_v_artist_manufacturer=Angelo%20Badalamenti\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eBlue Velvet\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e vibe is present throughout, but it’s more song-y, and that’s fine, as Julee Cruise has an exquisite voice. I can't help but think she was destined for more than “the girl who sings the Twin Peaks songs” before she met David Lynch. \u003cem\u003eFloating Into The Night\u003c\/em\u003e is bolder than a lot of the music it's often compared to (basically just the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Cocteau+Twins\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eCocteau Twins\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e), unafraid to play with familiar tropes (jazz, new age) and put a perverted twist on them. “I Remember” starts off innocently enough, but there’s a bizarre left turn that comes about halfway through, like you’re actually watching a Lynch movie. “Falling” is the one you’ll recognize from \u003cem\u003eTwin Peaks\u003c\/em\u003e, and “The Swan” and “The World Spins” repeat some of the same themes to close out the album. Other highlights: “Floating,” “Into The Night,” “I Float Alone”.
