But imagine my delight to learn that the album in question was recorded on March 6, 1963 with Trane’s classic quartet (\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=McCoy+Tyner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMcCoy Tyner\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e, \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Jimmy+Garrison\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eJimmy Garrison\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e and \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Elvin+Jones\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eElvin Jones\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e), yup the same bulletproof group that put down \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Coltrane+Ascension\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eAscension\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e, \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=coltrane+Ballads\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eBallads\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e, \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?\u0026amp;q=Coltrane%20Quartet%20Coltrane\u0026amp;filter=Brand\/Manufacturer\/Artist_fq:%22The%20John%20Coltrane%20Quartet%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eColtrane\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e and of course, \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?\u0026amp;q=A%20Love%20Supreme\u0026amp;filter=Brand\/Manufacturer\/Artist_fq:%22John%20Coltrane%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eA Love Supreme\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e. Six months after \u003cem\u003eBallads\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003eDuke Ellington \u0026amp; John Coltrane\u003c\/em\u003e, the quartet booked the day at \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Rudy+Van+Gelder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eRudy Van Gelder\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e’s studio in New Jersey with \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Bob+Thiele\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eBob Thiele\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e, just two days after Tyner recorded his \u003cem\u003eNights Of Ballads And Blues\u003c\/em\u003e LP, and one day before the \u003cem\u003eJohn Coltrane And Johnny Hartman\u003c\/em\u003e album, all recorded in the same room. We're not sure why the material found on \u003cem\u003eBoth Directions At Once\u003c\/em\u003e wasn't packaged and released as an album in its day, but the session's master tape was ultimately destroyed years later to cut down on \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Impulse+Records\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003eImpulse Records\u003c\/a\u003e’ storage space (yes, really). Luckily, Trane himself was given a spare copy, which has quietly remained in the possession of his first wife Naima’s family, until now. On “Untitled Original 11383,” you can hear Trane chipping away at something new, hinting at the greatness later achieved on \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=A+Love+Supreme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eA Love Supreme\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e. Says Coltrane’s son \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Ravi+coltrane\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eRavi\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e, who helped prepare the release: “In 1963, all these musicians are reaching some of the heights of their musical powers. On this record, you do get a sense of John with one foot in the past and one foot headed toward his future.” Includes a stunning recording of “Impressions,” which was untitled at the time of this session and later became a jazz standard after a live recording on the album of the same name.
