She intended to join a Jazz conservatory program, but chose to focus on her own songwriting, self-releasing music under the name Jay Som, which was created by a \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=wu+tang\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eWu Tang\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e name generator and means “Victory Moon”. She has been compared to artists as disparate as \u003cstrong\u003eMount Eerie\u003c\/strong\u003e and \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=carly+rae+jepsen\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eCarly Rae Jepsen\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e, she claims vocal influence from \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=yo+la+tengo\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eYo La Tengo\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e and her personal experiences with Karaoke. \u003cem\u003eAnak Ko\u003c\/em\u003e means “My Child” in Tagalog and remains a very personal, self-directed release, but for the first time, her process includes collaborations with outside artists including \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=chastity+belt\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eChastity Belt\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e’s \u003cstrong\u003eAnnie Truscott\u003c\/strong\u003e and \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=vagabon\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eVagabon\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e’s \u003cstrong\u003eLaetitia Tamko\u003c\/strong\u003e. Anak Ko is more relaxed than 2017’s \u003cem\u003eEverybody Works\u003c\/em\u003e, her compact post-genre compositions given much more room to stretch out. “If You Want It” starts the disc off with twangy bass, clean drums, and hazy, lingering vocals. The intro to “Superbike” interpolates the chords to \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=third+eye+blind\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThird Eye Blind\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e’s “Semi-Charmed Life”, leading the way to a dense din of sounds cut through by hazy, \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=my+bloody+valentine\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMy Bloody Valentine\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e-esque vocals. “Tenderness” is a definite highlight, Casio preset beatbox and breezy chords set the stage for a dramatically swelling chorus with thick bass, drumrolls, and doubled chords.
