It’s easily their most listenable album released this decade, not to mention their best art direction since \u003cem\u003eBright Lights\u003c\/em\u003e. After self-producing their last two records, the band chose to work with \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Dave+Fridmann\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eDave Fridmann\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e (of \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Mercury+Rev\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMercury Rev\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e) in his analog studio in upstate New York, recording live as a unit and cutting straight to tape, eschewing ProTools. This brings out a certain warmth that’s totally new to the \u003cstrong\u003eInterpol\u003c\/strong\u003e sound, and the hot drums and gooey compression of “The Rover” almost sounds more like \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Tame+Impala\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eTame Impala\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e or \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=The+Flaming+Lips\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe Flaming Lips\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e than the band that made the clinical-sounding “Slow Hands” or “\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?\u0026amp;q=Turn%20On%20The%20Bright%20Lights\u0026amp;filter=Brand\/Manufacturer\/Artist_fq:%22Interpol%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003eObstacle 1\u003c\/a\u003e” (which we love). Nevertheless, \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Paul+Banks+interpol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003ePaul Banks\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e’ witty songwriting is front and center, and the lyrics for tracks like “Stay In Touch” “Surveillance” and “NYSMAW” indicate he’s growing more comfortable as Interpol’s protagonist. \u003cstrong\u003eSam Fogarino\u003c\/strong\u003e’s drumming is loose and funkier than ever, having taken inspiration from \u003cstrong\u003eAl Jackson Jr.\u003c\/strong\u003e as well as \u003cstrong\u003eJimmy Jam \u0026amp; Terry Lewis\u003c\/strong\u003e, and closing track “It Probably Matters” is probably the most soulful tune of the band’s career.
