Anyone already familiar with \u003cstrong\u003eSagar\u003c\/strong\u003e’s music - or \u003cstrong\u003eMacky\u003c\/strong\u003e’s slack indie pop, even - will find slipping into \u003cem\u003eHelium\u003c\/em\u003e’s rich, hypercolor grooves quite effortless. Like the album title suggests, it’s a bit like experiencing familiar strains of smooth jazz, pop and R\u0026amp;B while sucking on a giant balloon, with sugary melodies inspired by \u003cstrong\u003eYoung Thug\u003c\/strong\u003e and modernist lyrics inspired by \u003cstrong\u003eHaruki Murakami\u003c\/strong\u003e’s surrealism. Riding the sparse saltwater trap of “Anything At All,” \u003cstrong\u003eSagar\u003c\/strong\u003e recites millennial credos like “Everyone I know \/ lives in my cell phone” and “I should probably put this down \/ I don’t need a thing right now” with a single detuned snare pulling double duty for an absentee kick drum and a bassline that only surfaces during the hook. Next, on lead single “Like Mariah,” a big cartoony MIDI slap bass straight out of \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Dean+Blunt\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eDean Blunt\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e’s book propels \u003cstrong\u003eSagar\u003c\/strong\u003e's crooning in trademark \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=mariah+carey\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMimi\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e falsetto style. “Nothing Could Be Better,” “Just Like My,” “Other Than,” “(Secret Track)” and the vintage \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=three+6+mafia\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eTriple 6\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e vibes of “All Night Long” are also in heavy rotation here in the Lab office.
