The gang got in the studio in 1978 to create an album that would “evoke the atmospheres of the South Pacific islands, the kind of places Japanese people spend their vacations,” and the result is a rare full-length foray into breezy city pop, cerulean jazz and tropical fusion that’s (almost) entirely instrumental, unlike the players’ individual solo works from around this time. \u003cstrong\u003eHosono\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003eSuzuki\u003c\/strong\u003e and \u003cstrong\u003eYamashita\u003c\/strong\u003e get top billing, but \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Ryuichi+Sakamoto\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eRyuichi Sakamoto\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e and \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Yukihiro+Takahashi\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eYukihiro Takahashi\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e play on nearly every track too, making this a precursor to \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Yellow+Magic+Orchestra\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eYellow Magic Orchestra\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e (along with \u003cstrong\u003eHosono\u003c\/strong\u003e’s \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?\u0026amp;q=Paraiso\u0026amp;filter=Brand\/Manufacturer\/Artist_fq:%22Haruomi%20Hosono%22\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eParaiso\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e, released the same year). “Kiska” is our personal fave of the set; a \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Herbie+Hancock\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eHerbie\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e-grade synth funk groove drizzled with ace sax and guitar solos by \u003cstrong\u003eYamashita\u003c\/strong\u003e collaborators \u003cstrong\u003eHidefumi Toki\u003c\/strong\u003e and \u003cstrong\u003eKenji Omura\u003c\/strong\u003e. The nine-plus minute “Nostalgia of Island” suite begins with some slightly-unsettling surf guitar and synth pads straight out of \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=David+Lynch\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eDavid Lynch\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e’s unproduced beach party flick, fades out to the sound of crashing waves and into some more upbeat (but still Lynchian) summery beach pop sporting a single \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Beach+Boys\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eBeach Boys\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e-esque vocal refrain; the only vocals to appear anywhere on the album.
