The first few numbers are consistent with this latest iteration; mature blues rock arrangements brushed with pastoral touches of harpsichord and honkey tonk brass. But dig a little deeper and you’ll find krauty textures reminiscent of the self-described ‘ambient punk’ sound that defined mid-career touchstones \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Deerhunter+Microcastle\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eMicrocastle\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e, \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Deerhunter+Halcyon+Digest\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eHalcyon Digest\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e and Cox’s solo work as \u003cstrong\u003eAtlas Sound\u003c\/strong\u003e. The recent addition of a full-time synth man is immediately evident on tracks like “Tarnung” (guitarist \u003cstrong\u003eLockett Pundt\u003c\/strong\u003e’s lone vocal contribution), the moody, \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Jean+Michel+Jarre\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eJ.M. Jarre\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e-esque “Greenpoint Gothic,” or Cox’s bizarre, dreamlike monologue “Détournement.” These atmospheric passages serve to bolster the more magnetic pop numbers, like “Element,” “Futurism,” “Plains,” and the album’s grand centerpiece “What Happens To People.” The latter’s ethereal synths, grand piano vamps, start-stop beat and Cox’s weightless vocals makes it something like Deerhunter’s 2019 answer to “\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?\u0026amp;q=Halcyon%20Digest\u0026amp;filter=Brand\/Manufacturer\/Artist_fq:%22Deerhunter%22\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"\u003eHelicopter\u003c\/a\u003e;” it's every bit as catchy and charismatic but a little less disheartening. Production is handled by the band in partnership with Welsh folk songstress \u003cstrong\u003eCate Le Bon\u003c\/strong\u003e, veteran producer \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Ben+Allen\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eBen Allen\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e and engineer \u003cstrong\u003eBen Etter\u003c\/strong\u003e, and despite the austerity of the album title, this is actually one of the band’s lightest and most listenable works, touching on aspects of all their great records to date (except maybe for \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Deerhunter+Monomania\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eMonomania\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e, which seems like \u003cem\u003eWHEAD\u003c\/em\u003e’s spiritual antithesis).
