After the hapless release of \u003ci\u003eInfinity Within\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eDewdrops\u003c\/i\u003e was an obvious label afterthought. Promo hustlers, dripped in stiff North Face, dropped boxes of gold-stamped pre-release CDs at the lobby of my dorm. Not expecting much but always in look of freebies, broke NYU kids (the demographic quite different back then) grabbed copies along with the weekly pick-up of the New York Press (desperately waiting for the next Amy Sohn column).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\"Yeah this shit is pretty good.\" The album broke into the dorm's rotation amongst \u003ca rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/products\/digable-planets-digable-planets-blowout-comb-deluxe-black-vinyl-2lp\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003ci\u003eBlowout Comb\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e, \u003ca rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/products\/bjork-debut-vinyl-lp\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003ci\u003eDebut\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e, \u003ca rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/products\/portishead-dummy-180g-vinyl-lp\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003ci\u003eDummy\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e, \u003ca rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/products\/beastie-boys-ill-communication-remastered-edition-180g-2lp\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003ci\u003eIll Communication\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e, \u003ci\u003eThe Sun Rises In The East\u003c\/i\u003e, and \u003ca rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/products\/notorious-b-i-g-ready-to-die-180g-2lp\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eBiggie\u003c\/strong\u003e singles\u003c\/a\u003e. That \u003ci\u003eDewdrops\u003c\/i\u003e could even hang at this time of musical outbreak was indicative of the album's now-forgotten quality.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTo make sure we weren't recalling through a halcyon lens, we gave the post-\u003ca rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=World+Clique\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eWorld Clique\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e albums proper re-listens. Our verdict... \u003cem\u003eInfinity Within\u003c\/em\u003e is rightfully buried (sounds wafer-thin), but \u003cem\u003eDewdrops\u003c\/em\u003e sounded rich while presenting an accurate snapshot of this transitional period. The strong Deep House influence gave the album the backstop soul that \u003cem\u003eInfinity\u003c\/em\u003e lacked (Deep House eventually brought so many candy ravers out of the gully). We're guessing \u003cstrong\u003eTowa Tei\u003c\/strong\u003e's absence let \u003cstrong\u003eDJ On-E\u003c\/strong\u003e inject more \u003ca rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=A+Tribe+Called+Quest\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eATCQ\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e-inspired sampling into the mix (for example the opener \"Say Ahhh...\" features a very Tribe-like \u003cstrong\u003eEWF\u003c\/strong\u003e sample plus \u003cstrong\u003eKool \u0026amp; The Gang\u003c\/strong\u003e drums).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut really, it's all about \u003cstrong\u003eLady Miss Kier\u003c\/strong\u003e's performance. We've read that there was a refocusing after \u003ci\u003eInfinity\u003c\/i\u003e, and you can hear the added high-power energy throughout (the \u003cstrong\u003eMasters At Work\u003c\/strong\u003e-assisted \"Bittersweet Loving\" serves as the reintroduction). So many standout single-like performances (there were 3 official singles, but you could have easily picked 6). \"Picnic In the Summertime\" and \"Apple Juice Loving\" could have opened up a new career path (can you imagine an entire album of tracks like this?). Something to listen for: check out the outros on many of the songs.
