It was time well spent, as they built on the sounds and textures they explored in their earlier singles (archived by \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?q=Warp%20Records\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003eWarp\u003c\/a\u003e on the excellent \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?\u0026amp;q=broadcast%20work%20and%20non%20work\u0026amp;filter=Brand\/Manufacturer\/Artist_fq:%22Broadcast%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eWork And Non Work\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e). Reared on a heavy dose of vintage British psychedelia, \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?q=broadcast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eBroadcast\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e drew early (and somwhat lazy) comparisons to their mentors \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Stereolab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eStereolab\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e. The slick pop songwriting and expert production on “Unchanging Window” and “Papercuts” feels vaguely familiar yet hard to pinpoint; in retrospect, more similar to the nostalgic aura conjured by labelmates \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Boards+Of+Canada\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eBoards Of Canada\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e. More experimental tracks like \"Minus One\" and \"The Tower of Our Tuning\" reveal influence from \u003ca href=\"The%20BBC%20Radiophonic%20Workshop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003eThe BBC Radiophonic Workshop\u003c\/a\u003e and similar sound effects units. Considered at the time to be a left-field choice by \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?q=Warp%20Records\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003eWarp\u003c\/a\u003e’s A\u0026amp;R staff, as the indie powerhouse had dealt exclusively with artists working in the fields of techno and dance music, \u003cstrong\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?q=broadcast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003eBroadcast\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e’s signing to \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?q=Warp%20Records\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003eWarp\u003c\/a\u003e makes much more sense in hindsight, and it’s hard to imagine them having such a fruitful run on any other label. \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?\u0026amp;q=the%20noise%20made%20by%20people\u0026amp;filter=Brand\/Manufacturer\/Artist_fq:%22Broadcast%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe Noise Made By People\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e indeed rocks, but there are hardly any noticeable guitars in the mix at any time throughout the course of the record. Their inventive approach to a five-piece band setup and non-purist attitude predates the ubiquity of electronics in indie rock that would follow in their wake.
