There’s an emphasis on crafting great songs with discernible lyrics on \u003cem\u003eExploding Head\u003c\/em\u003e, and musically, it’s closer to \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Depeche+Mode\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eDepeche Mode\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e or \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=New+Order\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eNew Order\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e than \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?\u0026amp;q=jesus%20mary%20chain\u0026amp;filter=Brand\/Manufacturer\/Artist_fq:%22The%20Jesus%20And%20Mary%20Chain%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eJ\u0026amp;MC\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e. But this is still the loudest band in New York, so of course there’s still that omnipresent layer of pedal fuzz draped over the whole mix (Ackermann’s company \u003cstrong\u003eDeath By Audio\u003c\/strong\u003e builds boutique guitar pedals with a clientele list as wide reaching as \u003cstrong\u003eLightning Bolt\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Nine+Inch+Nails\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eNine Inch Nails\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e and \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=U2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eU2\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e). “Slipping Away” is the centerpiece of the album, and listening back almost ten years later, it's a candidate for the most resonating song in their entire body of work, but don’t sleep on “Smile When You Smile,” “In Your Heart” or the title track, either.
