Whoooo!"), and the band is tighter than ever. But in the midst of all that fire, the entire album kind of has a meloncholy tone running through it, as seen from the hangman on the cover. Check the title track,"Game Theory, "Don't Feel Right", and "In The Music" for a lesson on how to start your LP. Three heaters in a row with every song flowing into the next one, so smooth. From the energy of "Here I Come", to the slowed down cruise of JDavey on "Atonement" the whole album is more like listening of a concise movement than a ,"listen to this track, skip that track" album. From media frenzies to Twitter rants, the Chicagoan has permanently taken residence in our lives, and most of the time, we don't mind because as a rapper, producer - an artist - he delivers. You've heard the story, how he set up camp in Hawaii and flew in hip-hop's creme de la creme - as well as indie rock and pop names plus Elton John! - to work on new material. And as soon as the first G.O.O.D. Friday tune dropped, we knew My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy was going to be special, and after a few listens, the album far surpasses expectations and is no doubt one of Kanye's finest offerings. "Dark Fantasy," "So Appalled," and "Blame Game," "Gorgeous," and "Hello Of A Life" are creative, meticulous, and genius pieces of work that swiftly move us past West's non-musical shortcomings. Then come "Power," "All Of The Lights," "Devil In A New Dress,""Monster," and "Runaway ," which underscore (again) Kanye's mastery of composing songs that don't sacrifice quality for mass appeal. If you follow non-commercial hip-hop in any capacity, you are no doubt familiar with the extensive list of artists that these two have worked with, and you know what these two cats are capable of. Accordingly, this project was so hyped that an earlier version that was leaked on the internet was completely shelved and reworked, this version is completely different than any advance tracks you may have heard. Does it live up to the hype? Of course not, but that doesn't prevent Champion Sound from being a pretty damned good, if occasionally inconsistent album. Madlib and Jay split reverse production and MCing duties on every other track; and while we're obviously checking this album more for the beats than the rhymes (there's a few moments here that make Pete Rock sound like Rakim), Jay Dee brings adequate lyrical heat & flow on bangers like "McNasty Filth" feat. Detroit homey Frank-N-Dank, and the first single "The Red." With that track's sick bumping analog-fart bassline, you'd only notice the words if they got in the way, and they don't. Neither of the pair break any new ground stylistically and I don't think that we'd want them to anyways; Madlib shows his sampling chops on "The Official," nicely utilizing a different chunk of the same Gap Mangione joint that Jay Dee used for Slum Village's "Fall In Love." And there's other treats here too. "The Exclusive" lets criminally underrated guest MC Percee P shine, the Jay Dee produced "Stars" amply demonstrates his knack for integrating samples with a more electronic, keyboard-based sound, and "No Games" is just a straight-up nasty beat, funky analog synths and shuffling drums showcasing Madlib at the top his game. Champion Sound's not gonna blow you away, but there's more than enough to chew on here. The amount of great beats these two are responsible for is kind of staggering, and that prolific creativity is ultimately what makes this album worth picking up.

black double vinyl pressing

music label: Stones Throw 2003

reviewed by Language 10/2003

ALSO AVAILABLE

Stones Throw: Turntable Lab Selects The Hits Of The 21st Century - Colored Vinyl 8LP Boxset

By special request, Stones Throw has pressed up copies of Dilla's beat sketch masterpiece Donuts with the "smile" cover, originally used for the CD version. Featuring beats by Emile Haynie, Plain Pat, and Dot Da Genius, the album is divided into five acts with each act describing Kid Cudi's confrontations/dealings with fame, lots drugs, and himself. "Scott Mescudi Vs. The World" starts the album off with the G.O.O.D. Music rapper bragging about the world that he is "ruling" over a simple mid-tempo, strings-driven beat and Cee-Lo Green singing the hook. Next up is "Revofev" in which Cudi offers up his solution to the world's woes ("so high up and I like it - some how I feel okay") through simple and repetitive lyrics delivered using his trademark singing style. Mary J. The only pop moment in the album comes courtesy of "Erase Me" featuring Kanye West, and the fresh, rock-inspired beat plays well with Kid Cudi's fun, "fucking around" lyrics. "Wild'n Cuz I'm Young" follows, and the rapper retreats back to the "deep downer" tone, which continues through the rest of the album with songs like "Mr. Rager" and "The End." Is The Legend Of Mr. Rager full of cuts you can play out? Add in Madlib's increasingly adept rhymes (yeah I said it) that flip dizzyingly back and forth in pitch from Quas helium to white-guy squeak to standard drawl, plus subject matter that references magic mushrooms as well as la yerba buena (Greenery), and you have a thoroughly psychedelic experience. I mean, the guy used Frank Zappa graphics on the cover and even has a song named after the Beatles' heaviest ode to acid ("Tomorrow Never Knows"). Of course, the main ingredient in this stew is the man's vast record collection, and for the beat diggers out there it's scrunched-face bobblehead time from the get. The requisite vinyl tribute is suitably sizzling ("Raw Addict Pt.2"), but each cut smacks unimaginative beatmakers silly with twisted drums ("1994"), loops to spare ("Raw Deal") and awkward/awesome chops ("Players of the Game"). I said it before, and I'll say it again: Lib might not have the smoothest flow on the mic, but he comes with consistently clever lyrics and precise metaphors that suit his beats impeccably . And did you see the video for "Rappcats"? It matches the tongue-twisting hip hop retrospective frame for frame. Frequent guests Melvin Van Peebles and Doom are both in the house, with the metal-faced fellow reprising a Madvillan cut over a new beat on "Closer". The youthful, nondescript delivery was born for the punchy Neptunes production. Exhibit A: the first 2 singles off the album "Grindin" and "When the Last Time" are just about the freshest thing to happen to hip-hop this year. By no means am I saying this is the best hip-hop album of the year, not by a mile; but it when it clicks it's pretty hard to deny a listen. The collaborations of "I'm Not You" featuring the Lox and Roscoe P. Coldchain, and "Comedy Central" featuring Fabolous are 2 of the stronger tracks presenting multiple angles over the moody Neptunes production. The multiple angles set the tone here, cause it seems the Clipse don't quite have the vocal charisma to sustain interest. But when they are paired with Pharell, Faith ("Ma, I Don't Love Her"), or any of the other collaborators, the formula completes itself. There are a few tracks that had some outside assists on production, most notably the Salaam Remi produced "Fu-Gee-La" and the title track which was produced by Diamond D (dig the Cymande sample on that one). The rest is pretty much history. There were three singles from that album that are probably permanently burned into everyone's mind who's old enough to remember the mid-90s. "Fu-Gee-La" kicked things off to be followed by "Killing Me Softly," which arguably helped Lauryn go off on her own. The final single was the Enya sampling "Ready Or Not," with it's equally-memorable over the top video. The sky was pretty much the limit for the Fugees. Unfortunately their relationships deteriorated over time and all that we're left with is their crowning achievement, The Score.

black double vinyl pressing

gatefold sleeve

original release year: 1996

music label: Columbia 2012

reviewed by Kool Moby 07/0214

J-E-R-U is a horror to you, lyrical kung fu so do your kung fu if you kung fu - the Damaja was like an epiphany when he dropped this LP. I always thought the cover and title had a lot to do with this album's popularity. I remember seeing that juicy cover and wanting to buy it without even listening to it, followed by a sesh at home with a dime of NYC's bottom level brown mexi. Underneath the exterior, the album manages to live up to its presentation. Start with the Quincy Jones-sampling "Night's Introlude" which establishes the album's thick, dense sound. Relax to the oversized basslines of "Wait A Minute" and wonder at the intriguing interludes like "Me + You" and "Time," "Groove Str," "Man Tha Journey" and "Bless My Soul" were my shit back then, back when you could rock 90bpm instrumental tracks and have the dough boys go crazy (strange times). Considering we haven't heard from him in well over a decade, D'Angelo comes through like a boss, hitting us with 12 powerful, inspiring, and relevant tracks sounding like a modern day Sly or Marvin. From the man himself - "Black Messiah is a hell of a name for an album. It can be easily misunderstood. Many will think it’s about religion. Some will jump to the conclusion that I’m calling myself a Black Messiah. For me the title is about all of us. It’s about the world. It’s about an idea we can all aspire to. We should all aspire to be a Black Messiah. It’s about people rising up in Ferguson and in Egypt and in Occupy Wall Street and everyplace where a community has had enough and decides to make change happen. It’s not about praising one charismatic leader but celebrating thousands of them. Not every song on this album is politically charged (though many are) but calling this album Black Messiah creates a landscape where these songs can live to the fullest. Black Messiah is not one man. It’s a feeling that, collectively, we are all that leader." Double vinyl pressing.
