This is his third official mix and I'll have to say, it's a mind ringer. You should know his style by now - dark, swampy funk, with murderous drums and sounds from beyond. Heavy beat brother Kutmah also jumps in on the action, for a straight hour of neck breaking evil breaks. If you're into that late 90's deep funk, eerie Mowax cuts, and spaced out instrumentals, look no further. Tracklist? Sorry, the Killer's M.O. is always a barrage attack, leaving no clues at the scene (I can only name the Flying Lotus and DJ Vadim's Motion Man "Terrorist" instrumental). Definitely something to enjoy while blasted on good headphones. Also, the sick artwork by Shepard Fairey makes GLK look as twisted as ever. Whoooo!"), and the band is tighter than ever. But in the midst of all that fire, the entire album kind of has a meloncholy tone running through it, as seen from the hangman on the cover. Check the title track,"Game Theory, "Don't Feel Right", and "In The Music" for a lesson on how to start your LP. Three heaters in a row with every song flowing into the next one, so smooth. From the energy of "Here I Come", to the slowed down cruise of JDavey on "Atonement" the whole album is more like listening of a concise movement than a ,"listen to this track, skip that track" album. Of course ?uestlove is overseeing all the mixes and direction, so you know the shit is going to be flawless. Nice touch on the record insert: all lyrics included. Haven't seen that since tapes.

music label: Def Jam / 2006

reviewed by C'mish 09/2006

When Donuts first rolled into the Lab, I gave it a cursory listen, and, wanting to get home to the new episode of Lost as quickly as possible, tossed off a pithy little blurb for it. This is obviously a key piece: his production album for BBE back in 2001 featuring Detroit/SV affiliates like Phat Kat, Frank N Dank, Elzhi and others.

music label: BBE / 2001

reviewed by the mgmnt 02/2006

LA's Flying Lotus is being setup as the next Madlib-Diplo-DJ Shadow-type producer cash cow. The hype is well-warranted in my opinion, as Flying Lotus well represents the new movement of LA producers, birthed from Dilla drum patterns, weird jazz records, accidental keystrokes, and imperfect facets. His music sounds like the result of humans finally mastering drum machines and sequencing programs to create organic music. Check the drums on "Breathe," the kicks and hand claps are liberated from standard beat measures. "Camel" creates movement we're not used to in a beat track; you can tell there's something else going on here. "Comet Course" shows the complete package in an uptempo flurry stew. "GNG BNG" is so fresh sounding, I can just picture Gaslamp playing this and doing his patented possessed behind-the-decks dance. In a play of depth, Flylo enlists several vocalist for the last third of the album including songstress Dolly on "RobertaFlack" and Gaslamp's partner Gonja Sufi on "Testament." 17 tracks overall, it lives up to the hype. Cosmogramma raises the bar to outerspace heights and goes above and beyond all expectations from the prolific LA producer with mind expanding cosmic jazz melodies, futuristic beats and bleeps from beyond, and totally organic yet unpredictable arrangements that prove why Flylo is at the top of the class for the new school sound. If Los Angeles was the mission statement, Cosmogramma is the magnum opus - a self-described "space opera" that treats the ears to new possibilites in the sonic realm featuring collaborations with relative Ravi Coltrane, harpist Rebekah Raff, bass virtuoso Thundercat, string arranger Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, and vocals from Radiohead front man Thom Yorke and Laura Darlington. There is also an undeniable spiritual jazz vibe soaked into the futuristic beat tapestries reminiscent of his aunt Alice Coltrane. This is something that needs to be heard in its entirety for the full effect but here are some picks: Check the opener "Clock Catcher" that sets the mood, "Pickled," the heavy head nod of "Zodiac Shit" and "Recoiled," the abstract funk of "Computer Face / Pure Being," the brilliant "And The World Laughs With You" ft. Then when you finally do buy the classic record, you find that it makes your life just that much better. For all you MTV youngins, this album is from the good ole' days when Mr. B-Real, Sen-Dog and Muggs were keepin it solid like Ashford And Simpson. So powerful, it made white-boys think that they looked cool in afros... So powerful, it caused teary-eyed inter-preppie rumbles over the ethics of inhaling weed smoke at my high school... So powerful, B-Real scored Electra. I think the beats on here are some of the most napped-on (rugged slang) from the golden era. "Pigs", "How I Could Just Kill a Man", "Hand on the Pump", "Real Estate", "Stoned Is the Way of the Walk"... If you follow non-commercial hip-hop in any capacity, you are no doubt familiar with the extensive list of artists that these two have worked with, and you know what these two cats are capable of. Accordingly, this project was so hyped that an earlier version that was leaked on the internet was completely shelved and reworked, this version is completely different than any advance tracks you may have heard. Does it live up to the hype? Of course not, but that doesn't prevent Champion Sound from being a pretty damned good, if occasionally inconsistent album. Madlib and Jay split reverse production and MCing duties on every other track; and while we're obviously checking this album more for the beats than the rhymes (there's a few moments here that make Pete Rock sound like Rakim), Jay Dee brings adequate lyrical heat & flow on bangers like "McNasty Filth" feat. Detroit homey Frank-N-Dank, and the first single "The Red." With that track's sick bumping analog-fart bassline, you'd only notice the words if they got in the way, and they don't. Neither of the pair break any new ground stylistically and I don't think that we'd want them to anyways; Madlib shows his sampling chops on "The Official," nicely utilizing a different chunk of the same Gap Mangione joint that Jay Dee used for Slum Village's "Fall In Love." And there's other treats here too. "The Exclusive" lets criminally underrated guest MC Percee P shine, the Jay Dee produced "Stars" amply demonstrates his knack for integrating samples with a more electronic, keyboard-based sound, and "No Games" is just a straight-up nasty beat, funky analog synths and shuffling drums showcasing Madlib at the top his game. Champion Sound's not gonna blow you away, but there's more than enough to chew on here. The amount of great beats these two are responsible for is kind of staggering, and that prolific creativity is ultimately what makes this album worth picking up.

black double vinyl pressing

music label: Stones Throw 2003

reviewed by Language 10/2003

ALSO AVAILABLE

Stones Throw: Turntable Lab Selects The Hits Of The 21st Century - Colored Vinyl 8LP Boxset

By special request, Stones Throw has pressed up copies of Dilla's beat sketch masterpiece Donuts with the "smile" cover, originally used for the CD version. One of the more intriguing skull designs I've seen over the last few years, wearing a blooming crown and emerging from flames is bordered by a milieu of foreign languages. Now, thinking about the music, I'm starting to gather that the confusing image is altogether appropriate. Claire Boucher, Grimes, comes from today's new school of electronic, dream pop, a school owing equal parts to Madonna, Bjork, and Aphex Twin's ambient works. But just as the mysterious letters that adorn the cover's skull, leaving behind the roaring fire, Grimes music is a foreign, fresh take on the aforementioned. Boucher warps and distorts the common conventions of electro and synth pop, weaving them into her own fantasies. Bouncy beats are held up by spacious and soft vocals, often times pitch-shifted and delayed, echoing on throughout. Strange samples flutter around verses, soaked in stereo sound tricks. It's a highly intriguing listen, and not merely for its production but furthermore for its melodies and hooks, it's a highly infectious pop record once all's said and done. One both for the home listen (make your daily routine a good touch weirder) and for the clever DJ looking to work in the obscure. Songs this incredible seem to will their greatness out of the mere fact of their existence, and there's really no point in me pontificating on the reasons for said greatness. Although no other song here achieved the commercial success of the title track, there's not a lick of the "let's tack some filler onto the hit single to make an album" style that was so prevalent back in the day - this is an album, and a great one at that. We're talking Al Green in his pre-hot-grits-in-the-face prime, backed by one the tightest bands ever, and led by southern soul legend Willie Mitchell. Tracks like "So You're Leaving, Old Time Lovin" and "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" are soulful masterpieces that showcase Green at the height of his power and mastery as a vocalist - his confidence as he cries, whispers, and moans his way through these tracks is utterly compelling. The only odd thing about that is he is from New York. This being his major label debut and him moving to LA doesn't change the dark, brooding sound that producer Clams Casino helped him champion just a year ago. Carrying most of the album on his shoulders, you can't have a rap album without guests. Santigold, A$AP Ferg, Kendrick Lamar, 2Chainz, Drake, even Skrillex dropped in. Stand out tracks include the Hit Boy produced 'Goldie', title track 'Long.Live.A$AP' is ridiculously banging, posse rap cut 'F*cking Problems', + the Skrillex co-produced 'Wild For The Night' is dubsteppy... but we can easily overlook that for Rocky. I tried to do it the way Madlib made the record: I smoked about 3 ounces of high grade and then got down to work. Unfortunately for Lab, that meant that I spent most of the time I should've been writing listening to this incredible LP again and again, giggling over the hundreds of tiny psychedelic fragments within. From the very first cut, "Bullyshit," where Quasimoto sounds like a "Just Don't Give a Fuck"-era Eminem, you know this is some bugged-out genius. There's not a single tune that runs the beat straight through without an incomparably odd break, sound effect or twisted change-up coming out of left field. Add in Madlib's increasingly adept rhymes (yeah I said it) that flip dizzyingly back and forth in pitch from Quas helium to white-guy squeak to standard drawl, plus subject matter that references magic mushrooms as well as la yerba buena (Greenery), and you have a thoroughly psychedelic experience. I mean, the guy used Frank Zappa graphics on the cover and even has a song named after the Beatles' heaviest ode to acid ("Tomorrow Never Knows"). Of course, the main ingredient in this stew is the man's vast record collection, and for the beat diggers out there it's scrunched-face bobblehead time from the get. The requisite vinyl tribute is suitably sizzling ("Raw Addict Pt.2"), but each cut smacks unimaginative beatmakers silly with twisted drums ("1994"), loops to spare ("Raw Deal") and awkward/awesome chops ("Players of the Game"). I said it before, and I'll say it again: Lib might not have the smoothest flow on the mic, but he comes with consistently clever lyrics and precise metaphors that suit his beats impeccably . And did you see the video for "Rappcats"? It matches the tongue-twisting hip hop retrospective frame for frame. The album continues the trajectory set by its predecessor, Within And Without, however Greene seems intent to lift the veil of darkness and shed some light with his psychedelia. The sound is lush and warm, filled with plenty of reverb while Allen has made sure to preserve the low end. Even though much of the rhythm section was recorded live the record still knocks. This has provided Washed Out with a unique sound, one that sees Greene moving beyond the boundaries set by the short lived chillwave tag. There are human touches where there should be which gives Paracosm a real feeling of personality. Vocals wash in only to be rendered incomprehensible, providing yet another layer of texture. This time around, now that he's been picked up by True Panther, he's got the help of producer Rodaidh McDonald. This adds some warmth to the sound, but still manages to preserve the rough hewed scars of Marshall's earlier work. The studio production also gives the vocals less noise to hide behind. The beats of old BOC releases are still there, it just seems they are more integrated to the other parts of the tracks. Although I like it when the beats oppose the rest of the song, this approach results in more of that polished "professional" sound, which seems to be the natural progression of our favorite downtempo producers. This album is closer in line to counterparts like Air. Both acts have obviously mastered the art of studio track making, with the results being slick, but not too slick. 15 tracks.

black double vinyl pressing

gatefold sleeve

printed inner sleeves

original release year: 2005

music label: Warp Records 2013

reviewed by the mgmnt 11/2005
