If you follow non-commercial hip-hop in any capacity, you are no doubt familiar with the extensive list of artists that these two have worked with, and you know what these two cats are capable of. Accordingly, this project was so hyped that an earlier version that was leaked on the internet was completely shelved and reworked, this version is completely different than any advance tracks you may have heard. Does it live up to the hype? Of course not, but that doesn't prevent \u003cem\u003eChampion Sound\u003c\/em\u003e from being a pretty damned good, if occasionally inconsistent album. Madlib and Jay split reverse production and MCing duties on every other track; and while we're obviously checking this album more for the beats than the rhymes (there's a few moments here that make Pete Rock sound like Rakim), Jay Dee brings adequate lyrical heat \u0026amp; flow on bangers like \"McNasty Filth\" feat. Detroit homey \u003cstrong\u003eFrank-N-Dank\u003c\/strong\u003e, and the first single \"The Red.\" With that track's sick bumping analog-fart bassline, you'd only notice the words if they got in the way, and they don't. Neither of the pair break any new ground stylistically and I don't think that we'd want them to anyways; Madlib shows his sampling chops on \"The Official,\" nicely utilizing a different chunk of the same Gap Mangione joint that Jay Dee used for Slum Village's \"Fall In Love.\" And there's other treats here too. \"The Exclusive\" lets criminally underrated guest MC Percee P shine, the Jay Dee produced \"Stars\" amply demonstrates his knack for integrating samples with a more electronic, keyboard-based sound, and \"No Games\" is just a straight-up nasty beat, funky analog synths and shuffling drums showcasing Madlib at the top his game. \u003cem\u003eChampion Sound\u003c\/em\u003e's not gonna blow you away, but there's more than enough to chew on here. From the very first cut, \"Bullyshit,\" where \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=article%2Cpage%2Cproduct\u0026amp;q=Quasimoto\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eQuasimoto\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e sounds like a \"Just Don't Give a Fuck\"-era \u003cstrong\u003eEminem\u003c\/strong\u003e, you know this is some bugged-out genius. There's not a single tune that runs the beat straight through without an incomparably odd break, sound effect or twisted change-up coming out of left field. Add in \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=article%2Cpage%2Cproduct\u0026amp;q=Madlib\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMadlib\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e's increasingly adept rhymes (yeah I said it) that flip dizzyingly back and forth in pitch from Quas helium to white-guy squeak to standard drawl, plus subject matter that references magic mushrooms as well as la yerba buena (Greenery), and you have a thoroughly psychedelic experience. I mean, the guy used \u003cstrong\u003eFrank Zappa\u003c\/strong\u003e graphics on the cover and even has a song named after the \u003cstrong\u003eBeatles\u003c\/strong\u003e' heaviest ode to acid (\"Tomorrow Never Knows\"). Of course, the main ingredient in this stew is the man's vast record collection, and for the beat diggers out there it's scrunched-face bobblehead time from the get. The requisite vinyl tribute is suitably sizzling (\"Raw Addict Pt.2\"), but each cut smacks unimaginative beatmakers silly with twisted drums (\"1994\"), loops to spare (\"Raw Deal\") and awkward\/awesome chops (\"Players of the Game\"). I said it before, and I'll say it again: Lib might not have the smoothest flow on the mic, but he comes with consistently clever lyrics and precise metaphors that suit his beats impeccably . And did you see the video for \"Rappcats\"? It matches the tongue-twisting hip hop retrospective frame for frame. Frequent guests \u003cstrong\u003eMelvin Van Peebles\u003c\/strong\u003e and \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=article%2Cpage%2Cproduct\u0026amp;q=MF+Doom\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eDoom\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e are both in the house, with the metal-faced fellow reprising a \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=article%2Cpage%2Cproduct\u0026amp;q=Madvillan\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMadvillan\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e cut over a new beat on \"Closer\".
