When I was first digging into the \u003cstrong\u003eCocteaus\u003c\/strong\u003e, the sample nerd in me wouldn’t allow me to truly get into this album because of the same chopped up \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=led+zeppelin+when+the+levee+breaks\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e“When The Levee Breaks”\u003c\/a\u003e drums used on every single track - I bet they thought they were pretty clever at the time (Robin Guthrie has since referred to this record as “an abortion”). So I subsisted on a steady diet of \u003cem\u003eHead Over Heels\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003eVictorialand\u003c\/em\u003e for years and years. Her lyrics are still pretty much indecipherable, something we’ve come to accept over a painful decade of trying to extract meaning from her work (although she was kind enough to include the lyrics to “Birthday Song” here). “Once a song has left me I want it to belong to whoever finds it. I write a song about feeling isolated. Listeners know the song is about their mother dying, the birth of their child, the way their last relationship ended. All these things and more. You could almost miss it, glance over the brilliance thinking it's just more music for that cousin of yours that carved his girlfriend's name in his arm at Thanksgiving. Give \"Touched\" a listen to get an idea of the incredible harmonics that these guys managed to pull. It reminds me of those flexible National Geographic records you used to get, the sound of whales fucking or something. I remember seeing these dudes perform \"Soft as Snow\" at Roseland over 10 years ago and the intro drums made a speaker topple over and broke some kid's nose. I guess you have to hive some serious mic action to compete with those guitars. \"Cupid Come\" has always been my joint on here. It's just a little more subtle and less formulaic than a lot of the other 'yes we have big muff and reverb voice I sing about being lonely' shit that can get to be a little tedious.
