But just as the mysterious letters that adorn the cover's skull, leaving behind the roaring fire, Grimes music is a foreign, fresh take on the aforementioned. Boucher warps and distorts the common conventions of electro and synth pop, weaving them into her own fantasies. Bouncy beats are held up by spacious and soft vocals, often times pitch-shifted and delayed, echoing on throughout. Strange samples flutter around verses, soaked in stereo sound tricks. It's a highly intriguing listen, and not merely for its production but furthermore for its melodies and hooks, it's a highly infectious pop record once all's said and done. One both for the home listen (make your daily routine a good touch weirder) and for the clever DJ looking to work in the obscure. The drums are given plenty of space while vocals are layered on top of each other. Parker channels a bit of Lennon with his voice, its hazy intonation pulling you gently into the fold. It seems that Tame Impala are intent on enveloping you with their sound. Heavily phased synths lead the way for Farfisa organs and clouds of tape echo to invade your ears. If you've been swimming in chill waves perhaps you should take a few steps to the left and indulge in some Tame Impala. And that seems to be what Washed Out is about, what you feel and sense; not so much whether there is any great meaning there or not. This was Vernon’s debut release as Bon Iver and helped put him on the road to indie\/folk stardom. The lo-fi and gritty quality to the recordings mixes wonderfully with the heartbreaking lyrics to create tangible and thick mood for the entirety of the album. “Skinny Love” and “For Emma” are the easy standouts on the record. “Flume” opens the album on a very subdued note and “The Wolves” carries along a similar somber atmosphere. His technique could be called rapping in the most abstract of senses. It's non sequitur but somehow you're able to derive some meaning from Ride's delivery.
