Opener “It’s Okay To Cry” showcases \u003cstrong\u003eSophie\u003c\/strong\u003e’s unwavering commitment to pop perfection before moving into more opaque territory with the junkyard dubstep of “Ponyboy” and “Faceshopping.” Her influences are on full display, albeit a bit warped and dissolved like they’re appearing in a perverse dream; “Infatuation” resembles \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Burial\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eBurial\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e’s timestretched reveries, and “Is It Cold In The Water” sounds like \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.turntablelab.mom\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Kate+Bush\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eKate Bush\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e riding the \u003cem\u003eMentasm\u003c\/em\u003e riddim. The thing about Pulp is Jarvis is straight and he writes about women and relationships in a profound way that is completely missing—\"Jeane\" being the rare exception—from The Smiths DNA. Morrissey’s loneliness seems to exist in its very own universe, which is fine, but Jarvis sings about girls, dildos, and a different kind of longing. Besides being a really fucking great band, Pulp does this one thing you can’t get from the Smiths catalog better than anyone. One of the few albums I can just keep flipping over and over and over to this day.
