But just as the mysterious letters that adorn the cover's skull, leaving behind the roaring fire, Grimes music is a foreign, fresh take on the aforementioned. Boucher warps and distorts the common conventions of electro and synth pop, weaving them into her own fantasies. Bouncy beats are held up by spacious and soft vocals, often times pitch-shifted and delayed, echoing on throughout. Strange samples flutter around verses, soaked in stereo sound tricks. It's a highly intriguing listen, and not merely for its production but furthermore for its melodies and hooks, it's a highly infectious pop record once all's said and done. One both for the home listen (make your daily routine a good touch weirder) and for the clever DJ looking to work in the obscure. His first full length, \u003ci\u003e6 Feet Beneath The Moon\u003c\/i\u003e, finds Marshall continuing down the familiar path laid down on his initial EP. This time around, now that he's been picked up by True Panther, he's got the help of producer Rodaidh McDonald. This adds some warmth to the sound, but still manages to preserve the rough hewed scars of Marshall's earlier work. The studio production also gives the vocals less noise to hide behind. Marshall's voice is pushed to the front, making for a more intimate feeling. The sparse instrumentation adds to this, as well. Occasional flourishes from McDonald add a misty effect, making it appear as if Marshall has disappeared into the fog. With this album the band was given the freedom to be their own producers. They built their own studio from the ground up and went in to record uninhibited by any time constraints. The result was some of their best and most divisive work to date. From the foundation set by this album they would go on to record \u003ci\u003eHeaven or Las Vegas\u003c\/i\u003e, the album most fans and critics agree is their best. You might be reminded of \u003ca href=\"http:\/\/turntablelab.mom\/search?q=The+Weeknd\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe Weeknd\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e, but Twigs is on to something else here. Although the band apparently has become more comfortable with the critical attention and the width of musical avenues they've traversed in their career, this record confirms that they haven't let superstardom pacify their dissatisfaction with big business government. Yet, Thom Yorke's penchant for extended syllables delivers his restless message on the strength of melody and does not low ball you in an over articulated, collegiate fashion. It's almost as if this refusal to stop being tortured validates all previous lyrical parlays \u003ca href=\"http:\/\/turntablelab.mom\/search?q=radiohead\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eRadiohead\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e have recorded for the world to hear? I don't place them in the same pantheon of monastic, community mindedness as a \u003ca href=\"http:\/\/turntablelab.mom\/search?q=fugazi\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eFugazi\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e, yet they must be filthy paid by this point. Where's the toss off disco record? The later career, cringe\/ wretch cameos? The officially sanctioned dancehall\/drum n bass\/house remixes? Perhaps their crowning achievement will be sustained hunger for a new voice, voices they're able to cultivate because of actual talent. \"2+2=5\" is the hard evidence I sight, with a \u003cem\u003eThe Bends\u003c\/em\u003e era explosion transitioning seam fully into a manic, strummy, rock combo directness. The album's conclusion, \"A Wolf at the Door\" combines echoes of \u003cstrong\u003eTim Buckley\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003eBilly Joel's\u003c\/strong\u003e \"We didn't start the fire\" and the \u003cstrong\u003e\u003ca href=\"http:\/\/turntablelab.mom\/search?q=beatles\" target=\"_blank\"\u003eBeatles\u003c\/a\u003e'\u003c\/strong\u003e \"I want you (she's so heavy)\", and yet delivers on the wings of trademark Radiohead keyboard swells. So I subsisted on a steady diet of \u003cem\u003eHead Over Heels\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003eVictorialand\u003c\/em\u003e for years and years. I drove into the city at 5am on the 20th of April, scooped up Phil and then we filled my truck to the brim as we stopped and gathered the gear along the way back to Massachusetts. I had a handful of songs that I was planning on recording, but by the time Phil arrived I was on a whole new level of heartsick and the songs were flying through my ears. I was basically lying in the dirt half the time. We went with the flow. We began and closed each day with an improvised acoustic guitar instrumental, and we made a collage of our favorite pieces, which became the first side of the instrumentals album.
