Everything is new and exciting!\" During this fertile time for me (AKA \"college\"), I heard the \u003cem\u003ePortishead\u003c\/em\u003e, \u003cem\u003eLet Us Play!\u003c\/em\u003e, and \u003cem\u003eEndtroducing\u003c\/em\u003e albums for the first time and, collectively, they BLEW MY MIND. I admit, this was a corny time for me (snowboarder pants + eyebrow piercing = ugh), but if I hear these albums I'll still bliss out idiotically to them. Fortunately, they're all watersheds of mid\/late 90s electronic music production, and have dated well. The full length that established DJ Shadow as \"the Jimi Hendrix of the sampler\" (what does that even mean) is still an eminently impressive production debut, almost 10 years later. Everyone knows it was made entirely out of samples, but at the core of this album, each track transcends beyond this limitation and becomes something truly new, making it a desert island pick. OK, enough already, here are the songs: \"Building Steam With a Grain of Salt\" has a crazy drum breakdown, \"Number Song\" is based off a Metallica sample, \"Changeling\" is in like 3\/7 time, \"Midnight In a Perfect World\" is a genre-defining masterstroke, and \"What Does Your Soul Look Like Pt 1\" is the elegant capstone on the whole affair. I shouldn’t have to tell you why, but if you are unfamiliar with the power, check out tracks like “What’s Going On,\" \"Inner City Blues,\" \"Mercy Mercy Me” and “Right On.” There are seven songs total and they unfold like a play in acts, each piece setting a different mood, and returning to themes with a final resolution. It’s nothing short of a masterpiece. On a personal level, this was \u003ca href=\"http:\/\/turntablelab.mom\/search?q=marvin+gaye\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eMarvin\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e's “coming out” album where he was able to emerge from the image of romantic pop crooner as a legitimate artist. He wrote, produced and arranged it almost entirely by himself and when \u003ci\u003eWhat’s Going On\u003c\/i\u003e broke in 1971, it washed over the consciousness of the whole country.
